Understanding Polyol Varieties for PU Foam Production

Explore the pivotal role of Polymer Polyol (POP) and Polyether Polyol (PPG) in polyurethane foam production. POP enhances foam hardness and load-bearing capacity, while PPG, with its ether bonds, serves as a vital component in various polyurethane applications. Discover the essential properties and applications of these key polyol varieties.

Polymer Polyol (POP)

POP is the common name of polymer grafted polyether polyol. It is one of the most important polyol varieties for PU foam. It is generally milky white to light milky yellow viscous liquid with stable properties and low toxicity. POP is mainly used in the production of high-load-bearing PU foam, improving the hardness and load–bearing performance as well as cell–opening. It can be used to produce high-hardness flexible foam, high-resilience foam, thermomoulded flexible foam, semi-rigid foam, integral skin foam, RIM products, etc.

POLYETHER POLYOL (PPG)

Polyether polyols are polymeric structures in chain or network structure polymerized in such a way that ether bonds are established between monomers. Polyether polyols are hydroxyl functional oligomers that are commonly used in the production of polyurethanes. They are produced by polymerization of alkylene oxide.

ISOCYANATE (TDI)

TDI is an 80:20 mixture of 2, 4 and 2, 6 isomers of toluene diisocyanate (TDI), difunctional isocyanate widely used in flexible foam application. This may be applied to automotive seating, furniture cushioning, mattress cushioning and specialty foam applications. It is also used as a reactive intermediate in coatings, adhesives, sealants and prepolymers applications. It processes well on all type of foam machinery and can be used with or without auxiliary blowing agents to produce a wide range of foam grades ranging from low to high density
